This summer in Loveland it seems we have been getting a grand mixture of weather. One day it will be scorching hot and humid and the next will be overcast with light showers and occasional hail storms. However, regardless of what is happening outdoors, summer is always a great time to try new things, especially if those things are refreshing cocktails. Pear Mojito

You are probably familiar with regular mojitos but have you ever had one that comes with the crisp and clean flavor of a ripened pear? If not, it’s time to leave traditional mojitos in the past and update this cocktail for your next dinner party. Here is how you can make it:


1.5 oz. of Rum

.75 oz. lime juice

.75 oz. simply syrup

1 oz. pear puree

Fresh mint leaves

Club soda


Start by using a highball glass. In the bottom of said glass, muddle some mint leaves to create the base of this cocktail. You can then proceed by combining the rest of the ingredients listed above other than the club soda in the glass. Add ice and transfer into a shaker and shake. Add club soda and pour back into your highball glass. You can add more mint or limes as a garnish if you prefer.

The Parrot’s Grog

If you enjoy spending your time outside on your back patio, drinking cocktails and soaking up the sun, why not transport yourself to your own little tropical island with this quenching drink?


1 oz. Campari

.5 oz. Rum

1 oz. fresh grapefruit juice

.5 oz. fresh lime juice

.5 oz. honey syrup

Club soda


Combine all of the ingredients listed above into a shaker, shake and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Pour to the top or to your liking with club soda and serve with a paper umbrella.

The Black Vlad

This cocktail tends to be the favorite of people who are up for a little adventure. An interesting combination of bitter ingredients renders of refreshing and quite strong drink that is sure to make the next bad day you have at work completely disappear once you get home and take your first sip.


1 oz. Rum

1 oz. Moonshine

1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice

1 oz. Falernum liqueur

1 dash bitters

Fresh mint or rosemary


Combine all ingredients in a shake and stir. Strain into a highball glass over ice that has been crushed. Garnish with rosemary or mint.

Sour Cherry Gin Smash

If you are a big fan of Cherry Limeades, then this is the perfect summer cocktail for you. This drink comes with a bright and beautiful color and a surprisingly tart taste. There is no doubt this is the preferred cocktail of those who have a sweet tooth.


2 oz. gin

6 sour cherries

1 sugar cube

.5 oz. fresh lime juice

Ginger ale

1 lime wedge


Use your cocktail shaker to hold the cherries and the sugar, muddle until the sugar is fully broken down. Add the lime juice and gin, and proceed to shake. Strain into a Collins glass that is filled with ice 3/4th way to the top. Add a splash of ginger ale and garnish with a lime wedge.

The Mexican Mule

Kentucky mules aren’t everyone’s favorites but they certainly can be adjusted to add different flavors if the typical ginger variety isn’t something you prefer. For example, this take on a classic mule is a wonderful summer cocktail alternative.


2 oz. vodka

.5 oz. lime juice

.75 oz. pineapple juice

.5 oz. ginger syrup


Combine all ingredients into your shaker and stir. Strain into a rocks glass with ice and garnish with a splash of spiced rum.
